Chunk Unloading Causing Despawn Issues

I died in the nether and before the despawn timer was up, my stuff despawned. I had not been in the nether the entire time (and it ended up being 5 and a half minutes before I got back) so the chunks shouldn't have been loaded. I'm guessing this could be related to the rendering issue that many people are experiencing.
