Unable to break blocks

I'm absolutely unable to break or place blocks. I was walking to a treasure location and I went in a nearby cave to search for the treasure then I made the sand in the cave fall then I shortly realized I was unable to break or place blocks at all. I tried restarting the game again but all seemed to fail. Yet I was able to break blocks in creative.
