campfire smoke turned acacia leaves to dirt pathway

In survival, placed a campfire on top of a hay bale under the canopy of an acacia tree. Smoke went up to leaves. I placed dirt so I could break through the leaves. Upon hitting the leaves with dirt in my hand, a big bunch of the leaves turned to dirt pathway and even had grass growing on them. See pictures below.
