Can't craft Blast Furnace

When trying to craft a Blast Furnace I expected:

to place items in crafting grid correctly and therefore craft a Blast Furnace.

 

Instead what happened was:

I input the items (correctly) into the crafting grid and nothing shows in the ''output area''

 

I hope this is enough information.
