Soul Sand/Magma Block water noises

When using the soul sand and magma block water trick while playing with other people, they can hear the sound that comes from it from an abnormally large distance away and that its not directional when they hear it. It sounds as if you are right next to them.  My friends have reported that they can hear it around 200 to 250 blocks away at times.
