if you stop in a mine cart under a hopper with no tracks under you and have no pickaxe you get stuck there forever

build a short track, put a hopper one block above track level and one block beyond the end of the track. put cart on track, get into cart, and run the cart off the track under the hopper. you are stuck there forever unless you have a pickaxe to break the hopper.
