Arrow drops when creeper is shot with crossbow at angle

When I hit a creeper with my piercing 1 crossbow between its legs and head as seen in the video attached an arrow is dropped which I can pickup. If the creeper has absorbed damage my view is the arrow should not drop. I tested with a bow and non-enchanted crossbow and this doesn't happen.
