java quit unexpectedly

Minecraft suddenly stopped working. It fails on startup, with the errors:

java quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple. 

In the launcher, I get: GAME CRASH An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
