Creating a new player bossbar does not take damage

So I became interested in the /Bossbaar command and wanted to get one for myself. I did some online searching and found a website I could understand. I followed the website and typed out the chain of commands exactly how they were on the site.

1:/bossbar add <id> <name>

2:/bossbar set <id> color <blue¦green¦pink¦purple¦red¦white¦yellow>

3:/bossbar set <id> name <name>

4:/bossbar set <id> value <value>

5:/bossbar set <id> players <targets>

This did work and gave me a boss bar with my own name, however, it did not decrease when I lost health. Is this a bug, or is there a command I'm missing? Thanks!
