Gravel floats in nether despite broken gravel blocks

Here's another weird one I found while chuggling along a weird chingle thing here. It's weird-- super long strand of soulsand and enormous natural gravel! It's pretty cool!

 

But when you break the gravel blocks, they don't all seem to be consistently chained together. Screenshots with the seed and location of the nether for you to verify.
