Furnaces Not Working

I tried to smelt iron in a furnace and it didn't work. All items appear in the furnace, but they do not smelt. I tried to smelt other items and had the same result. I also tried destroying the furnace, placing it back in, and making new furnaces, but nothing worked. Restarting Minecraft seems to fix it.
