Minecraft crashing upon loading chunks with water

Upon sailing in a multiplayer environment on the ocean far from spawn, upon entering new unloaded chunks containing mostly ocean biome, the game crashes a lot with the following error: java.lang.NullPointerException: Tesselating liquid in world
