Aquatic mobs disappear

I built an aquatic part of an exhibition center, and I put dolphins and drowneds into it. The next time I loaded this world they just disappeared. The areas I put them in were in a full lockdown so they couldn't flee to elsewhere. And when I say "disappeared" it means not a single mob could reappear. Is there something wrong with the game, or it's just intended?
