When placing a block through the hitbox of a ladder, a block is placed in the air behind the player

I attempted to place a block but accidentally right clicked on the hitbox of a ladder, resulting in a block being placed behind me, as if the ladder was actually a block that could have things placed on it. This only happened if the space behind the ladder's hitbox was actually empty and could hold a block.
