Cant hit mobs while jumping on horses

I was mounted on a horse with diamond Armour, i jumped rapidly but wasn't able to hit mobs, even though they were right next to my player and the cross hairs were directly over the mob. i have tried on all mobs and it doesn't let me hit them.
