Can't jump if I am touching the edge of the block

For some reason, if I make contact with the edge of a block and try to jump over it nothing happens, I can only jump if I jump from the centre of the block. This is very annoying when trying to get up some 'stairs' quickly since you have to jump at the perfect time.
