Can't jump when pressed against blocks

While pushing forward against a block I can't jump

What I expected to happen was...:
I would jump, and would fall pass blocks I jumped by

What actually happened was...:
When I pressed the jump button the screen shook slightly and I stayed on the ground instead of jumping
