Got killed by a skeleton and I couldn't see it and couldn't see my loot.

I was mining when suddenly a skeleton appeared and a zombie. I killed the zombie but the skeleton managed to kill me, I didn't think much of it and went back to get my stuff. I was running around trying to find my loot while an invisible skeleton kept shooting arrows at me. The only way I could see my loot and the skeleton was by leaving the game and coming back in.
