Fullscreen black bar flashing + game crashing

When I open Minecraft in full screen mode, there is a black bar that appears across the screen that does not go away and flashes, and after a few short minutes of that the game crashes. I have done a clean install, updated Java, uninstalled old Java versions, and used the default Minecraft textures. I have adjusted the resolution, which also results in a game crash. My game is unplayable at this point and I would appreciate a solution.
