Mobs are invisible after they kill me

I was in a mineshaft and a creeper blew me up. I went back and kept getting shot with arrows coming from nowhere. I could see the arrows and hear the zombies and skeletons, but i couldnt see them, which was not helpful at all. I eventually got killed by an invisible creeper.
