Elytra not activating

Elytra is not activating when pressing button bound to jump while in midair.

Went between Survival, Creative (to get the Elytra), and Spectator modes before attempting to use Elytra for first time. Teleported a large distance before putting Elytra in inventory. Attempted use in both Survival and Creative, as well as after restarting the game from the launcher. 

Nothing else was behaving weirdly in game.
