Freezes and crashes whenever I enter/exit water

Every time I enter the water in any singleplayer world- even if I quite literally JUST created the world- it freezes immediately upon me exiting the water. The game just stops responding entirely, and the only action I can take is to close it, which prompts a "The game crashed unexpectedly, sorry" message.

 
I don't understand what or why it's doing this. I've tried reinstalling. I've tried different versions. This is ONLY a problem on 1.13 and higher. Never happened nor can I recreate it on 1.12. I'm assuming it's some sort of issue with the swimming animation :/

It's making the game nearly unplayable for me. What's the purpose of playing the "update aquatica" if it crashes whenever I date set foot into the water lmao
