Blocks will not place

When placing blocks in creative mode, sometimes they won't place.

What I expected to happen was that the block would be placed and stay.

What actually happened was The block briefly appears then vanishes. 

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start building in creative.
2. eventually you will happen upon this.
