Auto-Crafting right click won't show alternate crafting recipes.

In short, I started up a survival world to try out all this great new stuff, and I collect some wood. I make the planks, no problem. I have on me both Oak and Birch planks, and want to have some Birch stairs accenting the Oak house. I find Oak stairs, but no Birch. I remember that you can right click to see other recipes, so I go to do that, but it doesn't show all the options. It just makes the click sound, and that's it. I couldn't find the Birch stairs anywhere else either. Obviously it's not a major problem, since I can just manually craft it, but it still might be an issue.
