Can't see any entities

I was playing Minecraft like normal. I created a new world and popped right in. I went to punch some trees and saw no blocks floating on the ground. That in-game night, I saw no mobs around me. Two creepers blew me up. A zombie hit me. I even turned to where I was being hit and saw NOTHING!!!
