Multiplayer Server Render Distance Issue

My actual view distance will not increase past 4 chunks on ALL multiplayer servers, even if I increase the slider past 4 chunks. I understand view distance is capped by the server, and know that the servers I've been on are capped above 4 chunks because other players on those servers can see much farther than 4 chunks.
