Add Smite to a sword using /enchant doesn't work

Tried add the 'Smite' enchant to a Diamond Sword using the following command: "/enchant JTAG minecraft:smite 4"

It returned the following error: "Diamond Sword cannot support that enchantment"

The sword already had Sharpness V which was applied using the "/enchant" command if that helps.
