Item duplication with "data" command

Using a datapack I made the following line run each tick:

execute as @e run data merge entity @s {Age:0s}

With that running, I manually, in game, ran the command:

/give @p minecraft:wooden_axe

The result is an axe showing up in my inventory and another axe dropping on the floor.
