Melon and Pumpkin not growing.

Old melon and pumpkin farm broken.  Only top layer of plants grow crop.  Crops planted above a lower half slab do not grow. Bonemealing matures the stem, but does not produce crop.  Tested covered with opaque and transparent blocks, same results.
