Sponge absorption pattern is irregular

Steps to reproduce (see most recent attached image):

1. Dig a 11 * 1 * 11 area.
2. Fill the area with water sources.
3. Execute /tick freeze.
4. Place a sponge in the exact middle of the area.
5. The absorption pattern created by the sponge is irregular.
