Dolphins will get distracted by items while searching for treasure

Dolphins will lead players to buried treasure when fed cod, but they also get distracted by items they see on the way, and will continue to play with them until they are lost or removed (which may take a long while). Once they are removed, the dolphin will continue to go to the treasure.
