Torches disappearing when placed on blocks

When placing torches on blocks the torches completely disappear. Relogging makes the torches reappear in your hotbar but placing multiple down depletes your stack and just disappear. Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which blocks won't work. Usually an area but once you move away they start working again
