Lava unplaceable on top half-slabs, side of double half-slabs or signs

I built a pit out of stone brick half slabs. First I attempted to place the lava against the wall but it wouldn't place. I tried placing it on the floor made of half-slabs and that did not work. I replaced one double half-slab block and replaced it with a full block and then I was able to place the lava.
