Trees from saplings not spawning properly

Placed down a spruce sapling, used some bone meal on it, and only part of the tree spawned.

 

The first time this happened only 2 logs appeared, and the second time it worked, but after a reload it was back to 2 logs & most of the leaves disappeared. I tried a 3rd time, and again only parts of it spawned
