Mobs (squid and endermans) take suffocation damage upon spawning

I've been trying to figure out why every enderman I encounter is in angry mode when nothing has happened to them. Then I saw squids spawn into the world and take damage upon spawning. I think the same thing is happening to endermans. They seem to be spawning in or near solid blocks, and then take suffocation damage, which sets off the enderman.
