rocket powered elytra flight

in the recent snapshots, rocket powered elytra flight is not working properly. instead of propelling you forward. the rocket fires upward as it would on the ground, leaving a trail of upward flying rockets behind. personally, I find this a might annoying. is there anything that can be done?
