Tools not working

i built a wooden pick-ax and it was able to break and drop 1 coal ore block. However, when attempting to mine another coal ore, the animation is as if you are not using a tool, with very slow pixalation, and block never breaks. I jumped to creative and got an iron pick-ax, and again was able to mine one block, but when attempting to mine a second block same problem.
