Growing a 2x2 spruce tree with bonemeal turns surrounding grass into Podzol

When placing four spruce saplings to grow a giant tree, the surrounding grass (12-18 block radius approx) turns to Podzol. When this happened to me in a multiplayer survival world on 18w15a I was in a Plains/Savannah.
