Crafting impossible with 1.12.2

Everytime I try to craft anything, I can't and when you click on the crafting book while at a crafting bench (using a world created in a prior version) the game crashes and exits.
When starting a new world in 1.12.2, I can't even craft planks in order to make a crafting bench.
I have tried restarting both minecraft as well as the computer to no avail.
