can't boost elytra

i was in a new world i created and got myself some elytras

so i jumped into the skies, fired my elytras and glided o the wind,
then i fired some fireworks, but i haven't been boosted.
What happened instead was that the fireworks we're shot as if i fired them from a dispenser.
