SelectedItem works in entity selectors but doesn't show up in player's data

This command works if you're holding a diamond: "/execute if entity @s[nbt={SelectedItem:{id:"minecraft:diamond"}}] run say hi", whereas "/data get entity @s SelectedItem" doesn't.
