Cannot smelt cactus at all

Cannot smelt cactus in a furnace. Tried all fuels, even wood. Replicate by placing down a furnace, mining some cactus and a few logs, and put the cactus in the top and logs in the bottom. Nothing happens; cactus should ideally smelt into cactus green dye.
