Trident does not return (Loyalty) when you do gamerule keepInventory true

I enchanted my trident with loyalty, and I made it shoot. It went away as usual, but before it came back, I died by a zombie. When I respawned, I still had all my stuff since gamerule keepInventory was set to true, but the trident's 'return string' kept circling around me, and it didn't show up in my inventory
