Player markers on maps do not shrink and instead dissapear

I was using a map in my survival, single player world, and when I moved away from the area of the map that was plotted, my arrow turned into a dot as expected, however, as I moved even farther away, the dot dissapeared instead of getting smaller.
What I expected to happen- the marker shrinked
Wat actually happened- the marker dissapeared
steps to reproduce:
1. get a new map
2. right click
3. move away from the plotted area for a while
4. the marker turns into a dot
keep going, and you will see it dissapears rather than shrink.
