Pistons act strange when pushing kelp

I was working on a semi-automatic kelp farm, so I tried using pistons. It did not work.

Instead of breaking the block next to the piston, everything breaks. However, sometimes a few blocks of kelp "survive". I find this very annoying and strange. I can't think of any other ways to make a kelp farm, either.
