trident with loyalty tries and fails to return after death if you have it thrown as you die

I enchanted a trident with all of the trident enchants, including loyalty, and in survival mode, I threw the trident and died. when i re-spawned, the trident looked like it was returning, (it was playing the animation) but it didn't return to my inventory.
