Can not craft Crafting table in 2x2 crafting grid

when four wood planks are placed in the player's 2 by 2 crafting grid, a crafting table fails to be crafted; no potential product is even show, and to crafting table can be taken from the visibly empty slot.
However, Crafting tables can be crafted by any other crafting table.
