Unable to create crafting table using spruce / multiplayre

Created a server with 18w06a, using world seed 12345. Spawned in taiga biome. Punched a spruce tree, got notices that I unlocked crafting table. Unable to craft it. Another player joined the same server, likewise unable to craft a crafting table using spruce.
