Chat is only visible in the eyes of the receiver

Updated 3/18/2018: I have resolved this issue on my own. My couldn't see his chat due to his opacity being set to 10%.

Brief description: Me and my friend were playing minecraft at his house and I tried typing in chat, and it didn't appear. However he has the same settings as me, but I CAN use chat. This still happens even on realms, not just hypixel that the only one I could right away since we were playing on it when I reported. THIS IS A VANILLA ISSUE!
What I expected: It would show up. Note that his chat setting is set as shown.
What happened: It didn't show up.
How to reproduce: I really don't know...That's why contacted you guys.
