no sound

I have no sound.
No music/blocks/mobs, no UI feedback, etc.

What I did last:
Updated Java,
restarted computer,
opened the MCJ launcher,
downloaded/installed 1.12.2,
felt deaf.

Prior to this I didn't have audio issues.
